Adult Learn-To-Sail

2025 registration for the adult learn-to-sail program is now open!

Toronto Sailing & Canoe Club offers the city’s best adult learn-to-sail programs, on both dinghies and keelboats. Every instructor is trained and certified by national authorities in boat safety and first aid, and is ready to provide a safe, fun-filled experience.

The TS&CC sailing school curriculum is based on Sail Canada standards. Students can earn nationally recognized certificates by demonstrating skills learned in the program. No previous sailing experience is required to enroll in CANSail 1 (dinghies) or Basic Cruising (keelboats). After CANSail 1 and Basic Cruising, students must have completed the previous level in order to advance to the next one.

Keelboat Courses

Basic Cruising

Objective: To cruise safely in familiar waters as both skipper and crew of a sloop-rigged keelboat of 6-to-10 meters, with an outboard or inboard motor, in moderate wind and sea conditions by day. No previous sailing experience is required for this course, which aligns with the Sail Canada Basic Cruising standard. The course runs with a maximum of five students, who learn with an instructor onboard.

You can join our keelboat fleet program once you have a Basic Cruising certification, and sail our keelboats for the rest of the summer at a discounted rate.

Dinghy Courses

CANSail 1/2

CANSail 1 introduces students to the fundamentals of sailing, including basic boat-handling and safety practices, while fostering confidence and enjoyment on the water. Level 2 builds on these skills and introduces basic racing concepts. The CANSail 1/2 course fee includes a crew membership for the season, so students can crew on members' boats on our Tuesday and Thursday race nights upon course completion. CANSail 3/4

CANSail 3/4 is designed for students who have achieved their CANSail 2 level. It includes advanced sailing skills and theory and the introduction of new skills, including sailing-by-the-lee and sailing backwards, as well as racing.

Although the CANSail 3 and 4 courses are run in one class, you will only be able to achieve one level per session. For example, the first time you take the CANSail 3/4 course you will be working towards your CANSail 3. If you achieve the CANSail 3 level, you can take the course again and develop more advanced skills (including spinnaker and trapeze) to work towards your CANSail 4.
