Outboard Engine Maintenance Seminar

This session will cover most routine maintenance on 2-stroke and 4-stroke outboards, and will be led by Pierre McAlpine, a member of our Club.

Registration is free, and available to the first 20 people who sign up.

Specifically session will include:

  • Fogging engine (a must at end of season)
  • Draining fuel (a must at end of season)
  • Replacing sparkplug(s) (once a season for 2-stroke, once ever 2-3 seasons for 4-stroke) and checking gaps
  • Replacing gear oil (highly recommended at end of season)
  • Replacing engine oil (4-stroke only) (highly recommended at end of season)
  • Lubing moving parts (recommended once per season)
  • Inspecting fuel lines and fuel filter (rec’d once per season)
  • Replacing water impeller (rec’d every third season)
  • Replacing points and condensers (pre-1977 outboards) every other season

Tools and supplies to accomplish absolute minimum fall maintenance (fogging, draining fuel, replacing engine oil (4-stroke only)

  • Sparkplug socket (there are three sizes, confirm which you need: 5/8, 3/4, 13/16)
  • 3/8 ratchet and extension
  • Fogging solution, gear oil or motor oil (you will need one teaspoon per sparkplug/cylinder)
  • Needle nose pliers, regular pliers, knife or cutter pliers, small flathead screwdriver
  • Container for catching left over fuel / oil
  • 4-stroke engine oil (for 4-stroke outboards only)
  • Engine oil filter (if equipped)

Tools and supplies for accomplishing “a little more” (replacing plugs, replacing gear oil, lube moving parts, replacing engine oil)

  • Sparkplug sockets and ratchet (see above)
  • Replacement spark plugs
  • Container of gear oil and gear oil pump
  • Receptacle for catching used gear oil
  • Replacement gear oil plastic washers
  • Large flathead screwdriver
  • Optional (hand impact tool with flathead insert) and hammer for removing stubborn gear oil drain plugs
  • Industrial grade (blue) towels or rags
  • White lithium lubricant grease spray
  • Plastic gloves (a few pairs) - gear oil skin contact should be minimized
  • Xerk grease gun (for outboards equipped with xerk fittings for easy grease lubing)
  • Marine grease cartridge for xerk gun

Tools and supplies for additional maintenance

  • Water impeller kit (specific to engine, need serial # and brand)
  • 3/8, 7/16 small wrenches or 10mm, 12mm small wrenches depending on brand
  • Marine grease
  • Points and condensers for pre-1977 ignition maintenance
